Colin White: Teacher Spotlight

Colin White: Teacher Spotlight

As our NSD teachers are working overtime to pivot to a new method of teaching, we are seeing some really innovative and creative things going on in the virtual classroom.

Our new TEACHER SPOTLIGHT feature will recognize and celebrate the work of our amazing teachers. As Northshore Learns v 2.0 gets underway, teachers are shifting towards Project Based

Meet COLIN WHITE, Social Studies teacher at Canyon Park Middle School.

We learned of Mr. White’s Virtual Stock Market Competition recently and thought this was a really creative and “real world” project to engage students, parents and even possibly grandparents. This project allows kids to learn and connect with others during this time when interacting with others is rather limited.

When we reached out to Mr. White we learned off of more projects he is working on in his virtual classroom (in collaboration with other social studies teachers in our district). Take a look at these engaging projects NSD middle school students will be working on over the next several weeks in Northshore Learns v 2.0

Washington in the 20th Century Scrapbook* (Students invent a historically accurate character including background details such as ethnicity, place of birth, location east or west of the Cascades, job, and family details. Students are then introduced to significant events from the 20th Century through primary sources, web sources, and readings. Students show their understanding by creating artifacts for their scrapbook [postcards, letters, want ads, political cartoons, and more] that match their character life and details.)

Virtual Stock Market Competition* (Using an online game that follows the stock market in real-time, students are given $20,000 virtual dollars to invest. They can follow their investments and make adjustments/trades along the way. May the most savviest investor win!

Leadership Activity BINGO* (Students are given a BINGO card full of different activity choices. Each choice is a different way to make a positive impact on their family, friends, or the larger community. Students choose a different activity each week and go for a BINGO (or a blackout)!

NOTE: The scrapbook project was given to Mr, White by Kim Matthews, one of Timbercrest’s excellent teachers. The stock market challenge was originally created by Casey Kellogg, an awesome teacher at North Creek High School, and the Leadership Activity BINGO I created with the help of content from CharacterStrong and other leadership teachers from around the District!

Thank you, Mr. White, for your commitment to bringing valuable education to your students in the virtual classroom. We appreciate all you are doing to “pivot” during these unprecedented times.

Colin White has been the recipient of several Northshore Schools Foundation grants and we are proud of all he has done.

If you know of a teacher in our district who is doing creative and innovative education in our new virtual classroom platform that we should know about please email their info to julie@nsdfoundation.org
