18 Jan STEM Rubiks Cubes at Timbercrest
Thanks to donors like you, a Timbercrest Middle School math teacher, Ashley Lovern received grant funding from the Northshore Schools Foundation to purchase a class set of Rubik’s cubes for a STEM extension in her classroom.
I have resources from You Can Do The Cube, which is a STEM based educational company that has instructions on how to solve a rubik’s cube, that is the beginner’s level. Once students master how to solve a Rubik’s cube, then they can work collaboratively with other students to make mosaics, which are each cube is solved a specific way and placed on a grid so that collectively a set of 24 cubes or 30 cubes makes a large mosaic,” says Lovern
Rubik’s Cubes help spark critical thinking, problem-solving, thinking mathematically, learning teamwork, and social-emotional skills by solving a challenging task with peers.
There are several connections students can make between the Rubik’s Cube and math.
According to Edutopia,
The Rubik’s Cube is an engaging way to explore many topics across content areas. With a growth mindset and determination to provide an engaging experience for all, educators can motivate students and inspire them to seek out challenges and pursue ways to think critically and solve new problems.”
