Hunger & Homelessness Facts
Source: https://hhweek.org/hunger-and-homelessness/
The Facts: No one should have to worry about whether they will have food on their plate or a roof over their head. But the reality is that hunger and homelessness are widespread problems that affect far too many people.
In the United States
- Many Americans are living on the edge, forced to choose between basic necessities like purchasing food, paying rent, or going to the doctor.
- 1 million Americans live below the poverty level
- 549,000 Americans are homeless on a typical night
- 42 million Americans are at risk of suffering from hunger
- 1 in 5 children in the U.S. live in poverty
Worldwide
While there has been slow but steady progress over the past thirty years, there are still a tremendous number of people around the world who live in extreme poverty.
- 795 million people do not have enough to eat
- 767 million people live on $1.90 a day or less
- 6 children die each minute of a hunger-related disease
- 3 million refugees have been driven out of their homes
What You Can Do
As a society, we have the resources and knowledge to end hunger and homelessness — we just need the collective will to make these ideas a reality.

Sponsor a Virtual Removing Barriers Jar
Our Removing Barriers Initiative provides funding for students in need throughout the school district. Last school year, the Northshore Schools Foundation helped more than 1,800 students experiencing crises by providing more than $160,000 in support. This year our preliminary budgets are requesting more than $500,000 to meet the estimated need.
So this year, we’re kicking off our annual Collection Bottle campaign with new urgency and a new option. We distribute actual bottles to locations across Bothell, Kenmore, and Woodinville to collect change in the community. If you would like to host a physical bottle during this season, you can pick one up at one of our many pop-up events in the next few weeks. But now, we are excited to be able to invite you to host a virtual collection to help remove barriers for students.
