Direct connection makes the difference: Opportunity fund

Opportunity Funds made a huge difference to students and families this school year.

As the end of this very unusual school year is already quickly approaching, we want to recognize how critical donations to the Opportunity Fund have been for Northshore students. We are so grateful for every donation.  We are grateful for the Care Team members serving at every school. And we are grateful to the generous sponsors who support this pillar of our mission.

Contributions to the Foundation’s Opportunity Fund, a Removing Barriers initiative, support Northshore students at all grade levels.

In the past year, the fund has been very heavily used. Needs have just been so great.

Care Teams

Care Teams at every school connect directly with students in need who might otherwise be overlooked or missed. We’re so grateful to staff and teachers who do this important work.   Thank you to every person who donates to fund the resources these students need. These kids should have access to the same learning opportunities as other students, regardless of the resources their families may or may not have.

Care teams started with the counseling department a few years ago when we were using the limited funds we had to try to support our families. The partnership with the Foundation gave us so much room to offer more.” Lettie Hobbins, Inglemoor HS counselor

Heather Erickson, our Removing Barriers Coordinator, described how funds have been used.

Opportunity Funds have traditionally covered costs such as program fees and travel expenses for academic competitions. When COVID hit, we started funding requests to cover internet bills, utility expenses, learning devices such as noise-cancelling headphones, and more.”

$55,351 has been distributed out to families from October 2020 through April 2021. We are projecting that we will need to raise an additional $60,000 to meet needs during the coming school year.

If you are able, you can add your contribution to replenish the Opportunity Fund for the 2021-22 school year.  Donate here.

Sponsors

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors who designate their support to be used exclusively for our Removing Barriers initiatives. Together, they provide more than $50,000 in support for our students and families in need. Thank you.Boeing
