BOTHELL, WA – The Northshore Schools Foundation announced today that it has received a grant of $30,000 from Bristol Myers Squibb to help students explore biotechnical skills and future careers.
The Bristol Myers Squibb funds will provide new state of the art digital and high magnification microscopes for student use as a part of coursework at each high school and provide scholarships for students working to become leaders in the global health community.
“Having equipment that is current and compatible with industry standards, greatly increases a student’s ability to be successful in post-graduation education and to be competitive in the workforce,” said Carmin Dalziel, Northshore Schools Foundation Executive Director. “Investing in students interested and gifted in health sciences, regardless of their income level, is an investment that has the potential to be lifesaving. We want to be a part of that trend.”
Northshore schools are located near the hub of Washington State’s Biomedical trades, housing dozens of local industry research facilities. NSD curriculum in Biomedical and Forensics continues to thrive and demand for classes is increasing.
Bristol Myers Squibb works locally to discover, develop, manufacture and commercialize therapies in Immuno-Oncology (I-O) and cell therapy with the goal of helping patients overcome serious diseases like cancer. With research and development labs in Seattle and a state-of-the-art cell therapy manufacturing facility in Bothell, their commitment to strengthening the communities where their employees live and work informs decisions to invest in programs like the Northshore School District that help students grow through STEM education.
“Bristol Myers Squibb is committed to improving access to STEM education for students in our region,” said Chris Holt, vice president cell therapy manufacturing and site head of the Bothell cell therapy manufacturing facility. “By investing in STEM resources for Northshore students, we aim to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals needed to advance innovative therapies for patients.”
It is anticipated that 14 high magnification and 14 digital microscopes will be added to student classrooms as a result of Bristol Myers Squibb funding during this school year. Additional funds will be directed to support student projects and scholarships for travel to regional and national competitions for Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA) students. HOSA is a global student-led organization that empowers future Health Professionals to become leaders in the global health community. More than 200 Northshore student compete in area HOSA activities annually.
More than 2,000 students in the Northshore School District will be impacted by this funding.
“We are humbled to have the Bristol Myers Squibb and to facilitate funding opportunities for our students,” said Dalziel. “Being a foundation that can attract and distribute funds in this manner is an important part of our serving our community.”
On Monday February 6, Holt, will be the featured guest on the Northshore Schools Foundation’s Skills4Life podcast which highlights people working in high demand jobs of the future. To learn more about Bristol Myers Squibb in the Puget Sound region, visit the Washington state hub
